Travel Advice | Paris

We are packing our bags and heading to Paris in September.  Doug's brother is getting married in Italy and we wanted to make a quick stop in Paris before we started the wedding festivities. One of my favorite things about this weird little blog is that I get to "meet" so many different people with different experiences. On all of our travels, I have taken recommendations from readers and it has been amazing. So here we are again, I ask you pretty please to share with me your favorites.

  1. Three of my favorite spots:

    1. The Rodin museum is my absolute favorite because its basically just a garden with Rodin's incredible sculptures throughout. Perfect to meander through when it's a gorgeous day but you still want to hit a museum.

    2. Les Refuges des Fondus in Montmartre is such a blast! Fabulous fondue, a very quirky atmosphere, plus its in Montmartre which is a great neighborhood for an evening stroll.

    3. I Love You wall: If you're already in Montmartre, which hopefully you will be if you're gorging yourself on melty cheese, stop in at the I Love You wall near the Abbesses metro stop. Just a pretty little garden with 1000 different ways to say 'I love you' -- personally I like to go sit with some wine and a picnic.

  2. YES! Paris is my fave. Here you go:

    1. The Louvre is amazing, but it's overwhelming. If your stop is Paris is LITERALLY for a day, peruse the Museé d'Orsay instead. It's close by / right on the Seine, and it's smaller, more manageable, and has mostly Impressionist art that you will recognize. Musée Picasso is also amazing.

    2. Walk EVERYWHERE - I think it's the only way to do Paris. It's easily navigable, and you see everything that way / get a better feel for the city. Le Marais and St. Michel / St. Germain des Pres are my 2 favorite areas. If you walk up & down the Seine through all the arrondissements, you'll see tons. Lots of street vendors line the Seine, too.

    3. Montmarte the Sacre Coeur is beautiful, but be careful going there at night. It's a little seedy.

    4. Other than that, I can't remember any fave restaurants because EVERYTHING is amaze. Eat everything in sight, and make sure you sit at an outdoor cafe awhile and people watch.

    Have so much fun!

    1. I am glad you said that about the Louvre. I have heard it is not worth it because of the crowds. I think we are staying in St. Germain. Oh my gosh this is making me so excited. Thank you for sharing!

  3. Oooh, how fun! You will have a blast. We were just there about six weeks ago. I recently did a recap post here: http://alizadventures.blogspot.com/2013/07/paris-sweet-romantic-paris.html

We also had some professional photos taken while we were there! http://alizadventures.blogspot.com/2013/07/anniversary-photos-in-paris.html

Safe travels, have fun, and eat more croissants and drink more wine than a normal person should!

  4. Lucky!! Paris is heavenly. Aspiring Kennedy does phenomenal travel blog posts - check her out!

If you don't have a hotel booked yet try Hotel Moliere. Fabulous location tucked just a few blocks from the Louvre, wonderful staff, so chic and awesome location for exploring.

And watch out for the crazies that will show you a postcard, or try and get you to hold their baby, and ask for help/money while another one pickpockets you. Tricky Tricky.

  5. Lucky madame! I just went for the first time last month, and it was fantastic. If you haven't booked a hotel yet, I'd stay in an apartment--really helps you to feel like a local (for cheaper!). I attached a recent post because it has specific restaurant recommendations that might be helpful. Enjoy!!

  6. There is a side entrance to the Louvre with no lines. Its just behind/ to the left of the carousel entrance. It's the wing housing art of Oceania/ Africa and the Italian art is very close to that entrance. Go to the flea market!!!! Also, the Grand Colbert is a fun restaurant for a Sunday lunch. Merci is a shop that everyone blogs about but I found it to be pricey.

  7. Love Paris! Have a great time! My favorite museum anywhere is Musee L'orangerie. You can read about it here.

Also, love Notre Dame & the area around it. If you can do a day trip Versailles is beyond amazing. I would go back to France again just to go there.

  8. Oh Paris...
I would do almost everything to get there asap.
Last time I was there, I often had the best panini EVER for lunch.
The shop was located in the Rue St. Honoré, just a few steps after the view on the Louvre.
And if you have the time, buy a bottle of Cidre and sit down on the Champs de Mars in the evening. I have always been loving this special atmosphere this place gets at night.
Oh, and if you have even more time definetely visit the Marché aux Puces!!! You will LOVE LOVE LOVE it :-D

  9. Um, I'm loving your life this fall, ha ha! I absolutely LOVE Paris. The first time I visited I tried not to get my hopes up, thinking that it couldn't be as good as in the movies, and surprise - it was better! My votes are for: Musee d'Orsay, exploring Saint-Germain-de-Pres (this was my favorite area for shopping and people watching, the Ralph Lauren store was fun, although we didn't have time for a drink there), and Notre Dame. We've never stayed here, but I told my husband that on our next trip, I wanted to rent through here: http://www.haveninparis.com/apartments/paris/

  10. So fun! It might sound weird, but you should look into Candelaria for some of the tastiest Mexican food! Also, we wrote a blog post about our 2012 Paris trip with a few other suggestions too - http://mapandmenu.com/paris/

  11. Definitely head up to Sacre Coeur at dusk - the views of the city are gorgeous and Montmartre is fantastic in the evenings! What a fun trip! I'm uber jealous - it's definitely my favorite city!

  12. If you will be there longer than 3 days, I highly recommend staying at the Paris Oasis. It's a true gem and very affordable given the other options in the City. Also, one of my favorite moments was a cab driver learning we hadn't yet been to the top of the Sacre Couer and dropping us off up there ate night on our way home. The night lights of the city are breathtaking from up there (also the Paris Oasis is within walking distance so you wouldn't be stranded)! Oh, and if you want to splurge, try to get a reservation at le Jules Verne (like I'd start trying now). It's the restaurant inside the Eiffel Tower and may seem like a super touristy place at first glance, but it's totally worth the hype. Have fun! I'm so jealous. I'd live in Paris if I could figure out how.

  13. It sounds so cliche, but Paris is one of the most magical cities I have ever been to! I keep a running tab of my favorite places to eat and see, you can check it out here: http://dicorciadesign.com/wanderlust/

  14. Paris, je t'aime! Have so much fun!! If you have time one night, head up to the top of the stairs at Montmartre for a great view of the city at night. The Louvre is fabulous but it will eat up your entire day. I loved the Musee d'Orsay if you want to get in a quicker museum visit. Oh and maybe just walk through the Louis Vuitton store. :)
